Lelystad a special city
Lelystad is generally considered as a green, wetland recreation area with the tranquillity and space that the Randstad conurbation lacks. This is indeed correct. However, Lelystad is also a paragon of modern architecture and urban planning. Many famous architects have contributed to that image.
Lelystad offers the most striking buildings, such as the impressive Agora Theatre by architect Ben van Berkel and the Zilverparkkade project, featuring designs by the famous Rotterdam architect Eric van Egeraat.
Some of the newer residential areas in Lelystad can truly be referred to as the architectural tour de force. The spacious and leafy residential districts stand out through their unique design and character.
The traffic system is separated and therefore safe and rather special: slow and fast traffic have their own specific road and path networks. No fewer than 46 cycling and pedestrian bridges cut across the city’s main roads, providing the city with its distinct profile. One such bridge, the Anaconda, specially built for cyclists, is considered the longest cycle bridge in the world.
